BAKOU, Azerbaijan, June 12
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received the credentials of the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic Claudio Taffuri.
The newly appointed Italian Ambassador presented his credentials to President Ilham Aliyev.
Welcoming the Ambassador, President Ilham Aliyev said:
-Welcome Mr. Ambassador and Madam. I am very glad to see you. Hope you have a good time in Azerbaijan. You will spend several years there. I am sure that you will notice from the first days that people-to-people contacts between our people are increasing and that Azerbaijanis know that Italy is a friendly country. This is important and you know the whole history of our bilateral relations, all the important milestones, and of course the signing of the documents on the strategic partnership actually reflected the substance of our cooperation. It really elevates the level of partnership to a very high level. And we see the practical implementation of this important political development, because it is obvious that without strong political ties, we would not be able to achieve great progress already in different areas. Political dialogue and strong political ties lay the foundation for cooperation in different fields and many Italian companies are actively working in Azerbaijan, implementing important projects for our country. These are large-scale projects worth billions of dollars and there are more opportunities in the future. Of course, we started with energy cooperation, and Azerbaijan’s oil supply makes Italy our biggest trading partner. But I hope we will find other areas to expand our business turnover. Then, of course, the implementation of the southern gas corridor created an absolutely new cooperation format, long-term cooperation. Italy is becoming one of the main markets for our natural gas and oil. These are really important achievements in our bilateral cooperation. The Southern Gas Corridor is truly a historic project of historical significance and great complexity. But now, I think that after all this has been accomplished, we must look to the future and friendly countries must find new areas of practical cooperation. I am sure this will happen because Italian companies are among the first foreign companies that have started to work with regard to the reconstruction of the liberated territories. You know that projects, projects of great importance, of symbolic importance for Azerbaijan and also economic development and infrastructure projects. In the energy sector, the production of electricity, Italian companies are already involved in the process of rebuilding destroyed hydroelectric power stations, in other areas, in manufacturing and production areas. So this really shows that we are strategic partners not only on paper, in documents but in reality. I am sure that you will be very active in Azerbaijan to further promote our bilateral cooperation in different fields so that we have long-term sustainable and successful bilateral cooperation. So welcome once again.
